Gender Differences in Factors Associated With High Suicidal Intent in Elderly Suicide Attempters

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives : The aim of this study is to find out how the characteristics of elderly suicide attempters with high suicidal intent differ by gender.
Methods : From March 2009 to December 2018, 294 elderly people aged 60 or older who visited the emergency room of a general hospital in Wonju, Gangwon Province due to suicide attempts were included in this study. Suicidal Intent Scale (SIS) score was measured for each elderly man and woman; based on the SIS score, the high and low suicidal intent groups were divided. Then, sociodemographic, clinical, and suicide-related factors were compared between groups through chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis.
Results : Of the 294 elderly people (men 154, women 140), 18.2% (n=28) of elderly men and 24.3% (n=34) of elderly women were classified as high intent suicide attempters (SIS11). As a result of binary logistic regression analysis, among elderly women, current smokers showed high suicidal intent (OR: 5.375 [95% CI 1.394-20.725]) and elderly men showed high suicidal intent when they attempted suicide using charcoal burning (OR: 7.750 [95% CI 1.229-48.886]). On the other hand, the risk of high suicidal intent was lower when interpersonal problems were the motive for suicide attempts in elderly men
(OR: 0.252 [95% CI 0.089-0.709]).
Conclusion : This study investigated the gender differences in factors associated with high suicidal intent in elderly suicide attempters. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the establishment of cost-effective preventive measures for the elderly at high risk of suicide in the future.
